About First954


I was born and raised in Capreol, Ontario. I worked for CN in the Area Engineering Office during the summers of 1965 and 1966. During the summers of 1967-1969, I worked as a brakeman out of Capreol. In the fall of 1969, I transferred to the Great Lakes Regional offices in Toronto. I left CN in 1975 to join the transportation department of Ontario Hydro. I moved to the USA in 1989. I am still an active photographer.

A pair of CP M636s, 4707 and 4731, lead an eastbound freight somewhere in Manitoba. The location I wrote on the slide has no rail service and the nearest line is about 50 miles away and it is CN (that explains why no map).

Another one of CN's many double-stack intermodal trains heads west through Milnet, Ontario on July 2, 2018 with a large cut of single stacks on the head end. Power for the train is the 2959 and 2952.

CP B102 was built by MLW in 1957. It is class SB-10b and weighs in at 230,000 pounds. CP had 4 slugs built new by MLW: B100 and B101 in 1951 and B102 and B103 in 1957. The unit was photographed in Thunder Bay. Location on map is a guess.

The outbound power for an eastbound train head around the shop area at Agincourt Yard on October 21st, 1979. Four C424s: 4240 4237 4206 4242 and RS-18: 8770 make up the consist. The first and third units have had their grills swapped out from the other side of the units messing up the multi-mark logo.

After a GREAT meet with a short northbound freight where neither train stopped, VIA Train #2 pulls out of the south end of the siding at Suez, Ontario in August 1998. VIA 6442 leads the 21 car this day.

CN MLW S-2 switcher 8133 rests at Spadina Shops between assignments on Valentine's Day 1971. A couple of interesting things about this unit is the font used for the cab number as it is the older style (pre-1961 style) and the classification data is not shown below the cab number. The unit was built by MLW in 1949 and is class MS-10a.

As I headed into CP's Agincourt Yard on Sunday June 5th, 1977, to see what there might be of interest, this auxiliary train with the 8428 was heading west. Found the train near the west end of Lambton Yard as they were preparing to rerail a couple of wayward cars that had left the rails.

After meeting a westbound freight and making its station stop, CN train 676 with 6526 for power and steam generator car 15450 wearing the markers accelerates away from Laforest. The clear signal at the east end of Laforest is clearly evident. Lots of 1970ish railroad detail is evident in the photo including a work train in the back track. Not many pictures exist of CN 3889. CN 3889 was the lead unit on an eastbound freight that was struck head on by a couple locomotives that were set in motion from the shop track at Foleyet, Ontario by individuals unknown on April 5th, 1964. The point of impact was at mile 3 of the Oba Sub. The remains of 3889 were sold to the Pacific Great Eastern Railway for parts. However, there does not appear to be many useful parts so I hope they didn't pay too much!

CN 9518 leads a pair of SD40s over the north switch at Suez, Ontario on August 11th, 1986. The second unit, 5002, is from CN's first order of SD40s with dynamic brakes. The third unit is 5135. They were making good time with only about 3 miles to go before reaching Capreol.

NW 6157 rests in CP's Agincourt Yard in Toronto, Ontario on July 8, 1979. The 6157 was part of a 50 unit order for SD40-2s that were delivered by EMD between April and June 1978.

VIA train 637 screams across the Credit River bridge in Port Credit, Ontario on a very hot, humid, and smoggy July 20th, 1980 morning. The three unit train consists of 6355, 6001, and 6122.
